1. What Is Print On-Demand (POD)?
POD is when you work with suppliers that provide you with white label products (like T-shirts, hoodies, phone covers, etc.) to then place your own designs on those products and sell them as your own.
For example, if you go to Etsy and type in “Graphic hoodies” you will get pages of hoodies being sold, most of them with some sort of graphic and/or text on them. Most of these products are “designed” by individuals just like you, some of which make even more than 10k per month!
A great thing about print-on-demand business is that you literally never have to manage, store or protect any physical product and that’s because products are only created after sale goes through. And then, the product is sent directly to the customer from the actual POD supplier.
2. What Products Should You Sell?
To get started with Etsy print-on-demand, the first thing you need to decide on is exactly what products you’ll be selling. My personal recommendation here is that you want to try and stick with a particular niche.
What I mean is you don’t want to sell animal clothing and at the same time meme clothing, for example. The two just won’t make sense being sold together. Instead, it’s better to either get good at just selling one thing, or sell things that have some type of correlation together.
Choosing your niche is a crucial component too. When designing your niche, make sure to choose a trending one, or one with a huge market. It will also be great if the niche you choose actually has your interest, but of course, I highly recommend choosing a trending niche with a big market, rather than one you like.
Do some research for today’s trends and market, follow the trends and your success will be way faster and bigger!
3. Get Design Ideas
Once you’ve decided on what you’re going to sell, it’s time to start coming up with design ideas.
Which means the first thing you’ll need to do is to come up with some inspiration. There are a variety of places that you can go for design inspiration like Pinterest and Designspiration.
For example, let’s say you wanted to find design inspiration for t-shirts. What you can do is to go to Pinterest and simply type in “T-shirt design”. This way you’ll get hundreds of different t-shirt designs from which you can get ideas!
Of course, the idea here is not to straight up copy those designs, but to get inspiration. There is a huge difference between stealing and getting inspired.
When I personally did the “T-shirt design” Pinterest search, the first result that popped up was an awesome design from an Etsy store called “WildWestGirlz“.
When I went to their page, I saw that it has 5784 sales, with an average product price of around $40. You can calculate yourself – this store has made over $230 000 mostly in passive income just from Etsy alone!
The path to make 10k a month on Etsy is just a matter of time and patience!
4. Create Your Designs
Creating your designs is the second most important part of building your Etsy store. Basically great designs = more sales. The main question here is what makes a good design? Well, the answer is not straightforward, but make sure to follow these:
- Always Consider What’s Currently Trending
- Use Simple Design Tools with Premade Templates
- Use Commercial-Free Use Graphics
- Focus on Text & Fonts Instead of Images
Following trends is a great and easy way to generate more free organic traffic and in consequence more sales. You can look through trending items on Etsy, Amazon Handmade & Big Cartel among other big players in the industry. You can use Google Trends and social media too.
Probably the best tool you can use to start creating designs is Canva. It’s very beginner friendly, it contains a huge variety of awesome designs and design features and you can use it for free with its 30 day free trial.
And, after your free trial ends, you can use another one of your emails and use it for another free 30 days, and repeat, which basically means you will have one of the best design tools for free, which is just awesome.
And last but not least, focusing on text and fonts instead of images is huge. Why – because it requires less time, people tend to like text more and you can use ChatGPT to give you great text phrases with a prompt like “Give me clever phrases to put on t-shirts”.
How to Create POD Designs When You’re Not a Graphic Designer
5. Create Your Printify Account
To start your Etsy POD business, you’ll need to create your Printify account. Printify will be the platform where you’ll be putting and finishing your designs. And it’s 100% free to use!
After you press the ‘Start for free’ button and sign up, you’ll see a massive catalog of different products you can customize. And after you find a product you like, you’ll just need to click on it and press ‘Start designing’.
Then, you’ll be redirected to the page where the design for the chosen product will be made. And it’s super easy and beginner friendly – you can add custom text, images, etc. You can also generate images with custom AI!
But how to put these products to your Etsy store after they’re ready? It’s way easier than you thought.
How to Integrate Printify with Etsy?
Obviously, first you’ll need to create an Etsy store, which takes 2 minutes to do. After you create it, you’ll go to your already created Printify account, then click on ‘My new store’ – ‘Manage my stores’ – ‘Connect’ in the following order, located on the top right.
After you click ‘Connect’, you’ll see the option to connect with Etsy. Then you will be redirected to your Etsy store to grant access and that’s it!
The way the integration works is when somebody orders a product from your Etsy store, that order gets automatically sent to Printify who then creates and ships the product directly to the customer. Which means you literally have to do nothing, except creating the designs.
